The Issue
This remote region of Nepal, once a bustling part of the original Everest Base Camp trail, has seen a steep decline in tourism since the opening of Lukla airport, which redirected trekkers onto a shorter, more convenient two-week route. As a result, local villages that once thrived on tourism have been left behind, with limited economic opportunities and essential services. The community is isolated, far from major cities like Kathmandu, which is costly and time-consuming to reach. A local medical clinic—free to use—is often the only accessible healthcare option for a population of around 20,000. Families are known to trek up to 2.5km across dangerous terrain for clean water. With dwindling tourism and scarce resources, charitable aid is crucial to support basic health and infrastructure needs in this overlooked area.
The Project
Bumburi Medical Centre which provides essential healthcare to around 20,000 people who previously had to walk for days or travel expensively to Kathmandu for treatment. Support covers salaries for a nurse and nurse’s assistant for six months.
Kari La Pass Water Project in Jubing village, which is bringing clean water directly to 50 rural homes by piping it from the Paiya river, eliminating the need for dangerous 2.5km treks over steep ground and cliffs to access water.
